Designing in Devon
May 14, 2013
I moved to Devon in February 1999 and started my graphic design business in June 1999. I quickly found that I was able to offer excellent graphic design and web design to my clients in Devon and Cornwall at ultra competitive fees. I had been studying the “new media” that was web design and quickly realised that it was essential to get on board this fast moving train.
I built my first website in 2000 and teamed up with a “coder” who enabled me to realise my design and concept. Back then it was a “black art” and we strived to add many bells and whistles to our websites (we don’t blow the whistles so hard now). Now, what’s all this got to do with designing in Devon? Well, being tucked away in a rural retreat enabled me to be lean and mean with my overheads. I passed these savings on to my clients and by 2003 I was building three to four websites at a time.
In 2001 I had a garden studio built (posh shed) and enjoyed looking over the green hills beyond whilst working. To this day I still find my design environment calm and focused with very few distractions. Okay, so the phone does ring, the email chimes and the lawn mowers buzz; but, I don’t hear the drone of traffic and constant noise from the hustle and bustle of a city. My long term experience in design enables me to monitor trends and moods. Ultimately though, I stick to my design roots and always choose to communicate rather than decorate.
Moving to and designing in Devon is genuinely pleasant and I’m a lucky chap!
